Stephen Moody is a visionary figurative abstract expressionist based in Scottsdale, Arizona.

I paint the fierce intimacy of being human — the threshold where protection meets surrender, softness holds steel, and longing transforms into becoming.

My figures are not posed; they are felt. They carry what we all carry: the ache of desire, the tremor of vulnerability, the quiet power of choosing to stay open. Through layered abstraction and raw expression, I create spaces where tenderness and intensity can coexist without apology. This work is an invitation — an emotional permission slip reminding us that we do not have to sanitize our depth to be worthy of being seen. My paintings honor the full spectrum of what it means to be alive.

Born in 1959 on St. Simon’s Island, Georgia, my earliest creative spark came from my mother’s enthusiasm for art amid the vibrant landscapes of Salt Lake City. A Kodak camera gifted by my father at age six ignited a lifelong fascination with capturing movement and emotion. After studying broadcast journalism in Salt Lake City, I left its rigid scripts behind and opened my own photography studio at age 24. There, my innovative boudoir portraits and expressive studies of dancers gained national attention, culminating in a Master of Photography Degree from the Professional Photographers of America in 1990.

Despite that success, I yearned for something more permanent. In Scottsdale’s searing desert heat, my true artistic awakening erupted in 2003 in the mystical embrace of my backyard pool. A chance encounter with an Australian shaman unlocked hidden realms; three sessions stirred dormant energies. I emerged transformed and returned to the water, creating profound images infused with shamanic vitality — the blueprints for my oils.

Today my canvases are alchemical fire: impressionistic nudes and portraits exploding in abstract expressionism. Reds ignite passions, purples thrum with mystery, blues conceal depths — shifting with the light from dawn’s hush to dusk’s blaze. Each piece is a vessel of spiritual energy, carrying both the shaman’s whisper and the raw truth of the emotional body. Drawing from life’s intricate dance, dreams, and the sublime beauty of nature, my work invites viewers to project their own experiences onto the canvas.

Beyond painting, I am also a published novelist who weaves these painted characters into my fiction. Whether on canvas or page, I remain committed to developing and celebrating the beauty and complexity of the human experience.
